| Chowan University has played a key role in the development of Murfreesboro. As a historical association, we take pride in the history of the institution, its collection of historical artifacts and the Columns Building, pictured right.
Chowan University, known as Chowan Baptist Female Institute until 1910, was founded in 1848 by Baptists of northeastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia. Chowan began enrolling men in 1931, and continued to operate as a four-year institution until 1937, when it became a two-year residential college. A shortage of students occasioned by World War II forced Chowan to close its doors in 1943. It reopened in 1949 as a private, two-year coeducational college affiliated with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. Chowan returned to four-year status in August 1992, enrolling juniors for the first time since 1937.
Accredited by the Commission on Colleges, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Chowan College awarded baccalaureate degrees on May 14, 1994, for the first time in 57 years. In 2006 the institution was renamed Chowan University to reflect the quality, diversity and growth of the institution.
