Christmas Around the World

This year the citizens of Historic Murfreesboro are bringing Christmas greetings from around the world to create for you a life-long Christmas memory. All American towns are composed of citizens representing a variety of nationalities – the United States is truly a cultural mosaic. Historic Murfreesboro is no exception. Many of the countries that have ties to past and present residents of Murfreesboro will be explored through their traditional Christmas food, music, and decorations.

The founders of Historic Murfreesboro were the Murfrees who migrated to America from Ireland to achieve religious freedom. Richard Jordan Gatling, the inventor of the famous gun, was a native of nearby Maney’s Neck, visited many European countries during his lifetime – including England, France, and Germany. The Caribbean will be featured in our Christmas world tour due to Murfreesboro’s connection to Dr. Walter Reed, who spent many of his boyhood years here and John Hill Wheeler, native of Murfreesboro, who served as US’s first Minister to Nicaragua. The African country of Liberia reflects the heritage of many Murfreesboro citizens and you will hear this story at the Wheeler House. Murfreesboro’s early churches and religious heritage will be portrayed at Chowan University --- the journey to The Holy Land. In 1825, the Marquis De Lafayette visited Historic Murfreesboro during his American tour. Holiday traditions of France will be enjoyed at the final stop, the Hertford Academy. What a “sweet” way to complete the holiday tour!

So, don’t delay! Make your reservation quickly. You’ll not want to miss out on the enchantment of a worldwide Christmas journey. In Historic Murfreesboro you’ll not be treated as stranger, but as a friend. Every year we welcome back more and more friends who make Candlelight Christmas in Historic Murfreesboro a tradition.
